Description

Tulipa Angel's Wish

Angel's Wish is a delightfully angelic bloom, the silky petals a just-off white shade, each petal with a wide brush-stroke of pale greeny yellow running from base to tip, which fades gently as the flower matures. It's an elegant single late tulip, so it has that classic goblet shape and flowers towards the end of the tulip season, in May. It's also tall and strong, so a lovely one for cutting and bringing indoors to decorate the home.

Growing

If you're planting tulip bulbs in borders and beds in the garden, do combine them with perennials or other bulbs that flower at the same time, in complementary colours. So creamy white Angel's Wish looks clean, fresh and wonderfully bright amid a frothy pool of blue forget-me-nots, or planted en masse among one of the cream or yellow varieties of fabulously scented wallflowers such as White Dame. Alternatively, you could go all out for May tulips and partner Angel's Wish with butter-yellow Golden Apeldoorn, which will bring out the yellow stripe on the petals of Angel's Wish. Barbie pink Fusarino Tulips would also make a rather fetching planting partner, creating a sea of pink and white ripples. Finally, it looks super sophisticated against a variegated evergreen backdrop – something like Euonymus fortunei 'Emerald n Gold' – the variegation bringing out its cream and green/yellow accents.

Did You Know?

Well, it's more than likely with this particular tulip variety, as its virtues have been given an Award of Garden Merit by the RHS, meaning it's reliable and attractive.

Planting Instructions

Angels Wish tulips are best grown in borders and containers. They like richer soils with good drainage.

Give tulips room when planting - we recommend 6-8cm between bulbs. Plant at least three times deeper than the bulb is tall. The pointy end is the top!

If you want to keep them flowering the following year, plant them DEEP (20cm is fine) and deadhead as soon as the flowers fade. Many varieties multiply happily in the ground, but if in doubt, lift them when the foliage has withered. Dry them in a dark, dry, cool place, remove any dried soil and store (in the dark at a low room temperature) in a tray or net, after removing any diseased or damaged bulbs. Replant the following October/November.

A high potash fertiliser during the growing season improves performance the next year. Lift and divide clumps of tulips if flowering is poor.
