Description

Budlight Lily Tulips

Inevitably, Budlight provokes the odd pun. So if you are bubbling over with excitement at the thought that this might be a most refreshing tulip, then you are right to do so. Budlight has that classic, waisted lily tulip shape that is so easy on the eye. The base of the flower has the clear gold colour you find in the best golden hops, fading smoothly to a creamy, foamy white at the top. Gosh - almost like a glass of Bud Light! This is no ordinary yellow tulip, we think it is a must in any garden.

Have a few Budlights in your Garden

This is a tulip to be planted in drifts when it is most effective, although in containers you could plant a double layer for a massed effect. At between 45-55cm tall, Budlight is a mid-border tulip. In full sun, you will see one of the most subtly coloured cream and lemon-gold tulips there is. Planted in semi shade the colours are less vivid, but the flowering period can run into June. Its stems are strong so it does better than most tulip sin a windy spot, and it makes a perfect cut flower. For fun, try interplanting it with other tulips such as Burning Heart, Apeldoorn or even Burgundy Lace. Alternatively why not choose from our selection of wallflower seedlings which complement tulips so well.

What's in a Budlight?

4.2% alcohol. Bud Light is the best selling beer in the USA and is the flagship beer in the Anheuser-Busch stable. However, ultimately it dulls the sense and makes you put on weight. Unlike its namesake tulip which puts a smile on your lips without that inch on your hips. So treat yourself to a Budlight. Go on... plant one.

Planting Instructions

Budlight tulips are generally best grown in borders and containers. They like richer soils with good drainage.

Give them a bit of room when planting - we recommend leaving 6-8 cms between bulbs which equates to about 50 per sq. metre. The planting depth should be at least three times deeper than the bulb is tall and it is better to plant too deep than too shallow (see below). The pointy end is the top...

If you want to keep your tulips for the following year, plant them DEEP (20 cms is fine) and deadhead as soon as the flowers fade. Many varieties will stay in the ground and multiply happily, but if you are in doubt, it is a good idea to lift them when the foliage has withered. Dry them off in a dark, dry, cool place, remove any dried soil and store them (in the dark at a low room temperature) in a tray or net, having first removed any diseased or damaged bulbs. Replant the following October/November.

Applying a high potash fertiliser during the growing season improves the flowering performance the next year. Lift and divide clumps of tulips if flowering is poor.
