Description

Tulipa Negrita

The Triumph Tulips are also known as the mid-season tulips because they bridge the gap between low-growing early tulips and the tall late ones. They come in every variety of brilliant colour. Negrita has relatively large flowers that are the traditional egg-shaped globe with dark, warm purple petals that are veined with beetroot coloured striations. The result is properly perennial tulip with a mesmerising colour and an outstanding flower with its shiny petals and strong stem. Browse all of our tulip bulbs.

The Classic Purple Tulip

Although it does sound like a particularly noxious cocktail, Negrita is the classic purple tulip to choose. Its purple mixes and matches with so many other tulips whether you want a hot, strident spring border or a cooler more pastel look. A top combination would be Negrita with  Blueberry Ripple. Tulips really come into their own when you grow them in a border that is primarily focused on looking good later in the season and Negrita is no exception to this. The tulips provide colour and interest against the half-grown foliage of perennials and shrubs that are not yet in flower. Negrita looks particularly good against the leaves of young phloxes which often have similar dark tones. This is one of the best of the Triumph tulips and suits being planted in large drifts down a bank or slope. Finally, consider forcing Negrita bulbs for indoor use - they flower fantastically well.

Negrita Knowledge

Negrita actually means little black girl in Spanish and is used as an affectionate nickname. The Rolling Stones wrote a song called "Hey Negrita" mainly because this was Mick Jagger's name for Bianca Jagger his Nicaraguan wife of the time. The spin off from this song was an Italian rock group based in Arezzo! Not sure any of this has anything to do with our tulip but it might endear it to any Stones fans out there?
