Description

Mirabelle Golden Sphere - Prunus insitita

Mirabelle Golden Sphere is a member of the damson family (Prunus insitita). This is an outstanding choice, producing masses of sweet, golden fleshed plum-like fruit. Like all Mirabelles, Golden Sphere flowers very early and the fruits ripen in August and early September.

Mirabelles are French and are usually grown there to cook (hence Tarte aux Mirabelles) - they are also much used in plum brandy distillation. Golden Sphere is good for both these purposes but it is also sweet enough to eat straight off the tree.

They are slender, slim trees and so are good in smaller gardens, and they are reasonably self fertile. Golden Sphere flowers later than Ruby and so is less prone to frost damage in exposed positions. Nevertheless, the best mirabelles grow facing south and/or west, and they all like moist, well-drained soil that is neutral to slightly acidic.

Please note that all our Golden Sphere Mirabelle trees are on St Julien A rootstocks unless otherwise described.
