Birch trees, the Betula family, are among the most elegant trees in the UK. Fast growing, they do well on both poor soils and damp sites as long as they are sunny.
Their bark tends to come in hues of silver (Betula pendula), white (Betula papyrifera) or sometimes pinkish white (Betula utilis jacquemontii).
They only cast light shade, great for growing plants underneath. They are often used as "nurse trees" in forestry or woodland garden planting schemes to shelter and improve conditions for other, slower growing trees like Oak.
What size Birch trees should I buy?
- If you are not in a hurry to get a full sized Birch tree, we recommend starting with the smaller 6/8cm girth size.
- If you are in a hurry and need instant impact, then go for the 8/10cm girth size.
Standard trees are measured by their girth 1 metre above the ground, and young saplings are measured by height.
So, a 6/8cm Standard Birch tree is much bigger than a 60/80cm Birch sapling tree or hedge plant.
If a tree is available in both sizes, it will be noted in the product description.
