Homemade burgers cooked on a barbecue

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb (450g) ground beef (preferably 80% lean, 20% fat)
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped (optional)
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced (optional)
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp paprika (optional)
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder (optional)
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder (optional)
  • 4 burger buns
  • Optional toppings: cheese slices, lettuce, tomato slices, pickles, ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Mixture:
    • In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, finely chopped onion, minced garlic, egg, breadcrumbs, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, paprika, onion powder, and garlic powder.
    • Mix the ingredients thoroughly using your hands or a spoon until well combined.
  2. Shape the Patties:
    • Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions.
    • Shape each portion into a patty about 3/4 inch thick. Make a small indentation in the centre of each patty with your thumb to prevent it from puffing up during cooking.
  3. Preheat the Barbecue (you can cook over gas if you don’t have charcoal):
    • Make sure your coals are glowing white hot with red centres.
  4. Cook the Patties:
    • Place the patties on the grill or in the skillet.
    • Cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until they reach your desired level of doneness. Top tip; if the flames get too hot or high, squirt some water over.
  5. Optional: Add Cheese:
    • If using cheese, place a slice on each patty during the last minute of cooking. Cover the grill or pan to melt the cheese.
  6. Toast the Buns:
    • While the patties are cooking, lightly toast the burger buns until they are golden brown.
  7. Assemble the Burgers:
    • Place each patty on a toasted bun.
    • Add your desired toppings such as our tomato and chilli chutney, lettuce, tomato slices, pickles, ketchup, mustard, and mayonnaise.
  8. Serve:
    • Serve the burgers hot with your favourite sides such as salad or coleslaw.
