Planting Blackberries & Wire Training

Planting Blackberries

Blackberry bushes tolerate most growing conditions found in the UK, and benefit greatly from anything to grow on for support, keeping their canes up off the ground and receiving sunlight.

Where can I grow Blackberries?

Blackberries in the wild are vigorous weeds, even in poor soil and shady corners.
They are ideal for getting fruit from problem areas in your garden.

  • Suitable for any soil type
  • Tolerates shade – a sunny site will give you better crops
  • Tolerates quite poor drainage
  • Very hardy, the only soft fruit, except maybe Elderberry, we recommend for a frost pocket

Improve the Soil: Improving the soil with well rotted manure and compost is a good idea.

When is the best time to plant new blackberry bushes?

Bareroot blackberries are planted in Winter.

Pot grown plants can be planted at any time of year, Spring or Autumn are ideal.

Growing on Wires is Best for Top Quality Crops

For great results in minimal space, train blackberry canes on a trellis of two to four wires.

Spacing rows of Blackberry Bushes:

The required space between each plant varies by breed: plants that differ from the typical spacing below will have a note on their page.

  • Plants along the row: 10 feet / 3 metres between each plant.
  • Between each row: 6 feet / 2 metres between each row.

Growing Blackberry in Large Patio Pots

Yes, absolutely, soft fruit are the fruit for growing in patio pots.
To spread your costs, it’s good to work your way up pot sizes, repotting into a 2-4 litre larger pot each year.
