What is Berberis Hedging?
Berberis or Barberry are dense, low maintenance, small to medium-sized shrubs that make great intruder proof thorny hedges, with decent ornamental value. They clip well into formal shapes.
They can be deciduous or evergreen, and will grow in any well-drained soil with a modest amount of sun.
• Uses: Boundary & ornamental hedges from about 50cm to almost 2m. Specimen shrubs for mixed borders.
• Good Points: Clips beautifully. Evergreen varieties tend to have more impressive flowers, while deciduous varieties have good Autumn colour.
• Position: Anywhere with good drainage and some light. Great choice for poor soils & inner city.
How many Berberis hedge plants do I need?
The planting density for your hedge depends on the purpose:
- For a normal garden boundary hedge, plant at 3 plants per metre (every 33cm) in a single row.
- An interior hedge for purely decorative purposes can be planted at 2 plants per metre (every 50cm) in a single row.
What size Berberis hedge plants should I buy?
Most of our Berberis comes in only one or two sizes. Where there is a choice:
- If you are not in a hurry to get a full sized berberis hedge, we recommend starting with the smaller size.
- If you are in a hurry and need instant impact, or are filling gaps in an existing hedge, then of course pick the bigger size.
Smaller plants are cheaper, easier to plant, and tend to establish better because they are dug up with most of their roots intact.
You can also clip them attentively and ensure a very bushy plant from the base up.
