Description

Junifer Redcurrant Bushes

Junifer crops appreciably earlier than Rovada, starting in early July. Ideal for redcurrant gluttons. Unusually for a redcurrant, Junifer will carry fruit on both this and last years wood. The fruit is tasty, although the flavour is not as strong as Rovada, and the plants are very high yielding.

Browse our other currant bushes, flowering currant for hedges, or all Soft Fruit Bushes.

Junifer redcurrants should be spaced at 1.40 metres between plants in each row, and about 1.5 metres between the rows themselves.

Please note that (apart from cordon redcurrants) all our currant bushes have at least 2 stems when lifted.

Redcurrants tolerate some shade well, where they tend to ripen later. They perform well on any well drained soil; if it is both poor and dry, improve it with compost before planting and use mulch around it; keep the mulch off the stems.

How to prune mature Redcurrants:

Two and three year old wood is the most productive. Prune out entire stems down to their base after their third year, in winter.
Prune the side shoots on two year old stems down to just above two buds up from the stem, this prepares them for the best crop in their third and final year.
Don't prune new stems, unless it is sagging low towards the ground, or if it is weak or damaged.
