Description
American Pillar Wichuriana Rambling Rose
American Pillar roses produce so much blossom in June that the rest of the plant almost disappears. The flowers are single and lightly perfumed- although the scent can be strong because there are so many of them. Each petal is dark pink at the tip lightening to pure white at the centre setting off the golden stamens. The whole effect is stunning. The catch is that the show happens but once a year although this can be mitigated by using American Pillar as a host for a summer flowering clematis. Look for a good white or blue that will flower through the summer and again in Autumn.
American Pillar is a very vigorous rambling rose growing to 6m by 3m with strong, thorny green stems and glossy, large leaves. It was bred by van Fleet in the US and introduced here in 1909. Perhaps strangely, it is one of the most popular rambling roses grown in France where counter to British propaganda they know their roses.
