Description
Deep Secret Hybrid Tea Rose
Deep Secret is a stunning rose and probably one of the darkest of the red Hybrid Tea roses with dark purple buds opening to rich velvety blooms that flower in flushes continuously from June until August. It strong, bushy and upright growth bears dark glossy foliage with a few thorns and is reasonably disease free. As with a number of the dark red roses, it is richly scented, and is of medium height, reaching a maximum height of 1m (3ft). It makes an excellent standard and is perfect as a cutting rose.

Planting Suggestions
Deep Secret is an extremely versatile rose due to its habit, strong and upright, and its size. It should not be placed in the middle of a bed, where it could be lost amongst other plantings, but rather towards the front of a rose bed or mixed border where the superb scent and wonderful colour can best be appreciated. It is the most exquisite colour, being deep, velvety red and can be used with many small shrubs that would accentuate the beauty of the flowers. One suggestion would be to plant it alongside small lime green shrubs such as Berberis thunbergii 'Aurea' or Lonicera nitida 'Baggesen's Gold as the colour contrast would be startling. Grow it in groups of 3 or 5 close to a terrace or sitting area, or as a standard, either in the ground or in a tub, perhaps as part of a formal planting scheme where it would provide an accent point - red and green are deliciously complementary.

Trivia
Rosa Deep Secret, originally named Mildred Scheel, was bred by Mathias Tantau Jr in 1976. Tantau had inherited Rosen Tantau in Germany from his father and specialised in developing roses of strong colour and disease resistance. One of his most famous roses (also deep red) is Konrad Adenauer which was named for West Germany's first Chancellor. Deep Secret was first introduced into the UK by Wheatcroft Roses in 1977.
