de Caen Anemone – Jewel-Bright Singles in Red, Violet, and White

The de Caen anemones are single-flowered garden anemones in a vivid mix of red, violet, and white — each with a dark centre that gives the flowers a bold, poppy-like quality. They are one of those bulbs (technically corms) that look far more exotic than their modest price and easy cultivation would suggest. At 30cm, they fill the front of a border or the edges of a path with low-growing colour from March into April.

Soak the hard, knobby corms in water for a few hours before planting — it softens them and speeds germination. Plant about 5cm deep in any well-drained soil. They are sometimes sold as "wind flowers" and tolerate exposed positions that would flatten taller bulbs.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between de Caen and St Brigid anemones?

de Caen are single-flowered, St Brigid are double or semi-double. Both come from Anemone coronaria and are available in similar colour ranges. The singles have a clean, poppy-like simplicity; the doubles are fuller and more ruffled.

Do I need to soak anemone corms before planting?

It helps. Soak for two to four hours in tepid water before planting. The corms are hard and dry, and soaking speeds up germination significantly.

Will de Caen anemones come back?

In well-drained soil and a sunny position, they often perennialise. In cold, wet gardens they may not survive the winter. Many gardeners replant each autumn for a reliable display.
