Description

Acer pseudoplatanus Saplings

Delivered by Mail Order Direct from our Nursery with a Year Guarantee

Sycamore, Acer pseudoplatanus, is a large tree that makes a superb windbreak for very exposed locations, especially by the sea.
Sycamore can, in theory, be grown as a hedge, but we don't recommend it for this.
Sycamore trees can reach 35-40 metres tall.
The plants on this page are young saplings, ideal for large scale planting or in woodland projects. You can also buy larger Sycamore trees here.

See our full range of hedging options.

Sycamore Saplings are only delivered bareroot, during winter (Nov-March).

Choosing a size:
When you are ordering lots of Sycamore plants, we generally recommend that buy the smaller sizes, graded at 40/60cm or 60/80cm. They are cheaper than large plants, easier to handle and they will establish well in poor conditions.
Use the larger 120/150cm tall plants if you want a big tree quickly.
All our Saplings are measured by their height in centimetres above the ground (the roots aren't measured).

General description of Sycamore plants:

An impressive, fast-growing, large, deciduous tree. The foliage is bright green with beautiful autumn tints and Sycamore trees will grow in any fertile soil except very wet sites.

History & uses:

Its wood carves well and has long been used for all sorts of small items, especially eating utensils known as treen. Sycamore is not a true native, but it has been naturalised in Britain for a thousand years or more.

Planting Instructions

Growing Sycamore plants:
Sycamores are tolerant of exposed coastal situations and atmospheric pollution. They will grow on any fertile soil, although they won't look their best on chalky sites.

Prepare your site before planting:
Native trees like Sycamore are very tough. The only essential preparation is to kill the weeds in a strip a metre wide along the planting site: improving the soil should not be necessary. If your soil is exceptionally poor and dry, then digging in some well rotted manure and/or compost is worthwhile.

Watch our video on how to plant a country hedge for full details.
Remember to water establishing plants during dry weather for at least a year after planting.

Planting Accessories:
Prepare your site for planting by killing the weeds and grass.
If you are planting in an area with rabbit and/or deer, you will need to use a plastic spiral guard for each plant, supported by a bamboo cane.
If your soil quality is poor, we recommend using mycorrhizal "friendly fungi" on the roots of new trees and shrubs.
You can also improve your soil with bonemeal organic fertiliser.
