Description
Rosa Maigold
Maigold is a reliable climbing rose with highly scented, "old gold" flowers. The first flush of these covers the plant and then they return following a brief rest after which flowering continues more steadily well into the autumn. In a mild winter, flowers persist into late November and occasionally you can find the odd bloom as late as Christmas Day. A cracking climber - which is why it has an RHS Award of Garden Merit. Maigold Roses in the Garden
Maigold is sturdy enough to be grown as a shrub which is useful given its tolerance of semi-shade and poorer soils. It is also robustly disease resistant. Grown in the right place, it can reach 12ft (3-4m) and a little bit less across. It's an excellent host for a large-flowered clematis. Give the rose a couple of years head start so it has a chance to build a framework of branches and then plant a clematis such as Lasurstern or Mrs Norman Thompson about 60-80cms from the main trunk. The flowers will complement one another and the clematis will fill in the gaps in Maigold's flowering schedule. Or you can bring the flowering season forward but using a spring-flowering clematis such as Markham's Pink.
