Growing Millennium

A fabulously easy to please plant as long as it is in a sunny, very well drained spot. Leave the flower heads in place for Autumn interest, then tidy before winter. The exception is when you divide mature clumps: trim them as soon as they finish flowering, then lift and split them.

In Your Garden Design

Create wonderful drifts of cottage-garden style colour with these marvellously architectural plants that are worthy enough to stand soldier-like in rows on their own or grouped together to create a spectacular display. It's lovely paired with nepeta and rosemary and really suits urban-style gravel gardens. They can produce wonderful pom pom accents interspersed between pink roses such as Bonica, and Geranium Pink Spice.

Did You Know?

In this case the plant has looked good enough to receive a plant of the year award within the nursery industry and we suspect it won't be long until it receives the further accolade of an RHS Award of Garden Merit.

Planting Instructions

The principal requirement is decent drainage - alliums hate permanently wet soil and they grow best in a sunny spot.

Space them quite widely when planting - these allium bulbs can be very big indeed and a clump will occupy a fair bit of space. The planting hole should be about four times deeper than the bulb is tall. The pointy end is the top...

The spent flower heads are very handsome and can be left on the plant or cut to make a dried flower arrangement. Allow the foliage to die back naturally before removing.

By all means apply a high potash fertiliser during the growing season to help bulk up the bulb for next year. Lift and divide clumps of alliums if flowering is poor.
