Golden Celebration David Austin Shrub Rose (Ausgold) Plants

A rose that is chosen for every Golden Wedding anniversary, birth of Golden Child, wedding of Golden Couple sort of thing, but with excellent reason.....Self-evidently Golden Celebration roses are a rich yellow gold colour but, rather like real yellow gold, it has a warming, enhancing quality that brings out surrounding colours. The flowers themselves are huge, cup shaped and exuberant with between 55-75 giant petals while holding themselves well with the very tiniest of nods on arching stems. The foliage tends to be entirely disease free and abundant in a pale green. The plant grows into a pleasing, rounded symmetrical shape. Notwithstanding the above, one of its main attractions is its superlative smell which even David Austin describes as very strong, and is redolent of tea, maturing into a Sauternes wine with strawberries.

A garden treasury

With its excellent posture and outrageous scent, Golden Celebration is a perfect candidate for a formal scented garden. Down South, you can also encourage it to climb a short way; provide supports and see the flowers cascade. Its Midas touch brightens and lightens a gloomy corner, not least because it puts up with partial shade. Although it will flower more profusely in the sun these things are relative and by comparison with most other roses you will not be disappointed by its output in partial shade. Try growing it with floaty Astilbes which actually require some shade and a moist soil. In more sun, dot lovely Alliums Purple Sensation or Aflatunense around it or some lovely Milkflowers (Campanula lactiflora). A clematis to consider would be Bill Mackenzie with its nodding, yellow flowers. If you are looking for a brighter yellow rose, have a look at the floribunda Arthur Bell or for a truly climbing yellow rose, Golden Showers would fit the bill.
