Description

About Fruhlingsgold

Fruhlingsgold is a large modern shrub rose introduced to the UK in 1951 7' x 5' (2.1m x 1.5m).It is large, vigorous, dense and prickly. This rose has a good flowering in early summer with single to semi-double primrose yellow blooms, lovely strong darker yellow stamens and an occasional second flush in late summer.

It needs space to spread out with its massive arching stems and, although reasonably disease resistant, it may be susceptible to blackspot. It is shade tolerant and has a strong delicious scent. It was bred by Kordes in Germany in 1937 and introduced into the UK in 1951 and was awarded an RHS Award of Garden Merit.

Great for your garden

Frulingsgold is an outstanding large modern shrub with dark, arching stems and lovely primrose yellow blooms and a delicious, heavy scent. Due to its size, 7' x 5', and its very strong stems it needs space to spread out as a specimen, although it is very happy in a mixed border when it can be used to support other plants and provide a superb flash of yellow in early summer and excellent maroon hips in autumn. It is quite a thorny rose and, therefore, a perfect rose for a boundary hedge. It prefers moist, well drained soil and will thrive in full sun or shade.

Trivia

Fruhling is 'spring' in German and the grower, Kordes, bred several early summer flowering modern shrub roses as a 'fruhling' series. Six of these are still available. Frulingsgold is a hybrid of Rosa Joanna Hill, a vintage yellow rose, and the wild rose Rosa spinosissima hispida.
